When the Anchorage School District dropped girls’ high school hockey in spring 2013, the Scotty Gomez Foundation Hockey Association picked up the sport for three years and re-developed it into co-operatives across Anchorage’s eight public high schools.
In Anchorage, competitive players play on year-round comp teams outside of high school sports, which are seasonal. A rule forbids players to compete in comp and high school hockey at the same time.
In 2015 DICK’s Sporting Goods surprised the girls at the Ben Boeke Arena during the Girls High School Hockey showcase with a sizable donation to the foundation to help keep the program alive through at least the 2018 season.
